The Asbestos in my building...
here is an email that I never forwarded to others in my building...I left for a ten day vacation with my family...once I return, I will then ask for plans to move my department to another location to begin. We'll see what happens...
**********************************************
All,
Just to add my comments to the email that was forwarded to you earlier concerning the Asbestos work in the hallway next to the Photography Department on the first floor of Wallace Hall, I want to say that it turns out that the tiles may NOT have contained Asbestos BUT the mastic adhesive that held them in place DID. This is according to Mark Salmon.
Once the tiles were chiseled away from the floor, the Asbestos WAS exposed to the air in tiny particles. These particles are too small for the eye to see BUT CAN CAUSE CANCER WHEN INHALED INTO YOUR LUNGS.
Mark Salmon told me that they had followed EPA standards when dealing with the replacement of the tiles. This was a lie. According to the EPA guidelines, whenever there is the remote chance that Asbestos might be in the substance, the correct procedure is to act as if it is present and follow all precautions. To correctly remove tiles that are held in place with Asbestos containing mastic, you must first wet the are down for at least 30 minutes to allow all surfaces to become moist with water before any work is started. This helps add weight to the Asbestos fibers and keeps it from becoming airborne. No water was EVER applied to the area PRIOR to the tile removal work done. The tiles were removed without any pre-wetting of the area and ONLY AFTER I COMPLAINED was any water applied to the floor. The following day. Too late for the exposure. Also, the employee doing the work did not wear a filter mask during his hammering and chipping away work on the first day. He walked up and down the hallway and into the front lobby and into the restroom area and tracked powder on the floor and allowed particulates to become airborne into the first floor area for three days.
EPA has a minimum standard of 260 square feet in order for them to enforce their regulations. The area in the hallway was less than that. They had no official role in the goings on in Wallace Hall. Therefore Mark Salmon STRETCHED THE TRUTH when he said they complied with EPA regulations. In fact, they weren't having to follow EPA guidelines and did nothing to ensure the SAFETY of the people working in WALLACE HALL because they could not be held accountable. But the Asbestos WAS released into the air and people working in Wallace Hall were exposed to toxic cancer causing Asbestos fibers in the air.
Mark to Steve that they used HEPA filters to clean up the area. This is also lie. I asked Mark if the vacuums used are HEPA filtered and he said "they are three stage filters, as close to HEPA as you can have without actually being HEPA.
Asbestos fibers can flow through most every filter EXCEPT HEAP filters. At any rate, the hallway walls and entire floor and ceiling were not cleaned by the worker that performed the job. They only sucked up the dust you could see.
Again: Most Asbestos fibers are too small for the eye to see.
The fibers attached themselves to your outer clothing and hair and can be transferred to others by touch and air flow and breathing. Like for instance, when MY four children body hug when I come home every evening after working for TROY University.
The possible danger of CANCER may not show up for 20-30 years. It may not effect my life, but it might effect the lives of my children when they are in the 30's.
This has caused me great concern. I will no longer be using the hallway that leads out the back of the first floor. I have sealed the two doorways that lead from our offices into the hallway. I will keep WARNING ASBESTOS signs posted on the door leading to the hallway from my area. I will not be entering the file area where department's old negatives are held in that hallway. I will not enter Reba Allen's office area or the old break room or the rear loading dock areas including the old printshop (as it was all wide open to the dust). I WILL be asking for my department to be transferred to another building location as soon as possible. I will remain where I am and so will Cassandra Davis, my only employee, until other working conditions can be arraigned.
Kevin
